Artists of Mongolia

Slightly smaller than Alaska, Mongolia is surrounded by China to the South and the Soviet Union to the North. Mongolia has a distinct beauty where one may see wild camels wandering in the great Gobi desert or witness fearless children easily riding horses bare back at remarkable speed.

Mongolia's capital, Ulaanbaatar, maintains a peri-urban and rural outgrowth comprised of ger settlements. A ger is a tent-like structure, from which the artisan's cooperative takes it's name. The GER (growing entrepreneurship rapidly) Initiative is stimulated by CHF International/Mongolia and enables local artisan cooperatives to improve their economic situations. Many artists participating in the GER initiative, such as the Wool Craft Cooperative, employ traditional skills of handmade artistry. Five photos are available to the right.
